What is a nameserver?

A nameserver functions as a directory service, matching domain names to their corresponding IP addresses — essentially operating like a phonebook for the internet.

Key Function

The nameserver stores DNS records for domains (such as 'example.com'). When users enter a domain into their browser, nameservers translate that human-readable name into the numerical IP address required to locate the website.

How It Works

When accessing 'www.examplewebsite.com,' the browser initiates a DNS lookup to retrieve the associated nameservers (such as ns1.examplewebsite.com and ns2.examplewebsite.com). These nameservers then provide the IP address for the domain, which the browser uses to request the webpage from the hosting server.
